The first step in technical analysis is to learn to read the charts. Here are a few basic lessons to guide your early attempts.

When first analyzing a currency pair, look for the prevailing trend. Start with the long-term charts (monthly, weekly, and daily), going back for several years. Because these charts contain a greater amount of data, they provide a clearer picture of just what the currency pair is doing than the short-term charts (hour, half-hour, 15-minutes, or 5-minutes). The extra data also makes what the indicators are telling you more reliable.

Identifying the trend is simple: just look at the chart and decide if the graph is going more up than down, or more down than up. Trends can be steep or shallow, years long or weeks short. Practice identifying them, and finding the points where they change direction. The longest-term trend is the strongest, which is another reason for looking at those charts first.

Even if you’re scalping or day trading and don’t intend to hold a position longer than an hour, you’ll do better by trading in the same direction as the prevailing trend. So take the time to identify it on at least the daily charts before you begin. There’s an old trader’s saying: “The trend is your friend.” It’s not a lie.

Once you’ve identified the trend in the long-term charts, compare that with what you see in the short-term charts. You’ll find that there can be any number of intermediate-term and short-term trends within the path set by the prevailing trend. The graph will waver up and down but overall it will follow the path set by the longest-term trend.

Next, find the support and resistance levels, which are the “floor” and “ceiling” points on the graph, respectively. These are key points on the chart where the price repeatedly refuses to break through, or just peeks through then gives up the fight. The price will go just so high or so low, but no further; it reaches that point then changes direction. The more times that happens, the stronger the support and resistance are.

Draw a straight line, either in your mind or on the chart, passing through most of the support points. Then draw another passing through most of the resistance points. This gives you a picture of the path the currency pair’s trend is following, called a price channel, and it’s a simple but powerful tool to help determine how that path will continue.

When support and resistance are strong, the graph of the currency pair seems to bounce along sideways between those two lines like a pinball. When this happens, the currency pair is said to be range-bound. As this happens 80% of the time, many people simply trade within channels, although this technique doesn’t deliver any jackpot profits.

These lines don’t have to be level. Sometimes the currency pair is trending up or down, but still moving within that channel. However it’s slanted, you can still trade within that range.

When a currency pair breaks out of a price channel, sometimes it falls back into the channel, and sometimes it gains momentum and keeps moving. This last is called a momentum market, and it’s the other way to trade the range: set an entry order for the price to break out, either above or below the channel, then sit back and let it ride.

Losses. You can claim any losses as deductions. These include fire and weather damage or floods. If you have insurance, you can only deduct the non-reimbursed portion, of course.

Insurance. The premiums you pay on your property insurance is deductible. You will probably have flood, fire, theft and liability insurance on the property.

Services. Any kind of fees you pay for services related to the property are deductible, such as attorney fees, accountant fees, payments to property management companies, real estate investment advisors and other professionals who provide you services to properly manage your rental property.

From the Edinburgh Lectures I had read something about the Law of Attraction, and from the Chapter of "Causes and Conditions" I had gleaned a vague idea of visualizing.

So every night, before going to sleep, I made a mental picture of the desired $20,000. Twenty $1,000 bills were counted over each night in my bedroom, and then, with the idea of more emphatically impressing my mind with the fact that this twenty thousand dollars was for the purpose of going to England and studying with Troward, I wrote out my picture, saw myself buying my steamer ticket, walking up and down the ship's deck from New York to London, and, finally, saw myself accepted as Troward's pupil.

This process was repeated every morning and every evening, always impressing more and more fully upon my mind Troward's memorized statement: "My mind is a center of Divine operations." I endeavored to keep this statement in the back part of my consciousness all the time with no thought in mind as how the money might be obtained.

Probably the reason why there was no thought of the avenues through which the money might reach me was because I could not possibly imagine where the $20,000 would come from. So I simply held my thought steady and let the power of attraction find its own ways and means.

One day while walking on the street, taking deep breathing exercises, the thought came: "My mind is surely a center of Divine operation. If God fills all space, then God must be in my mind also; if I want this money to study with Troward that I may know the truth of Life, then both the money and the truth must be mine, though I am unable to feel or see the physical manifestations of either; still," I declared, "it must be mine."

While these reflections were going on in my mind, there seemed to come up from within me the thought: "I am all the substance there is." Then, from another channel in my brain the answer seemed to come, "Of course, that's it; everything must have its beginning in mind.

The "I" the Idea, must be the only one and primary substance there is, and this means money as well as everything else." My mind accepted this idea, and immediately all the tension of mind and body was relaxed.

There was a feeling of absolute certainty of being in touch with all the power Life has to give. All thought of money, teacher, or even my own personality, vanished in the great wave of joy which swept over my entire being.

I walked on and on with this feeling of joy steadily increasing and expanding until everything about me seemed aglow with resplendent light. Every person I passed was illuminated as I was. All consciousness of personality had disappeared, and in its place there came that great and almost overwhelming sense of joy and contentment.

That night when I made my picture of the twenty thousand dollars it was with an entirely changed aspect. On previous occasions, when making my mental picture, I had felt that I was waking up something within myself. This time there was no sensation of effort. I simply counted over the twenty thousand dollars.

Then, in a most unexpected manner, from a source of which I had no consciousness at the time, there seemed to open a possible avenue through which the money might reach me.

At first it took great effort not to be excited. It all seemed so wonderful, so glorious to be in touch with supply. But had not Troward cautioned his readers to keep all excitement out of their minds in the first flush of realization of union with Infinite supply, and to treat this fact as a perfectly natural result that had been reached through our demand?

This was even more difficult for me than it was to hold the thought that "all the substance there is, I am; I (idea) am the beginning of all form, visible or invisible."

Just as soon as there appeared a circumstance which indicated the direction through which the twenty thousand dollars might come, I not only made a supreme effort to regard the indicated direction calmly as the first sprout of the seed I had sown in the absolute, but left no stone unturned to follow up that direction by fulfilling my part. By so doing one circumstance seemed naturally to lead to another, until, step-by-step, my desired twenty thousand dollars was secured. To keep my mind poised and free from excitement was my greatest effort.

This first concrete fruition of my study of Mental Science as expounded by Troward's book had come by a careful following of the methods he had outlined. In this connection, therefore, I can offer to the reader no better gift than to quote Troward's book, "The Edinburgh Lectures," from which may be derived a complete idea of the line of action I was endeavoring to follow.

In the chapter on Causes and Conditions he says: "To get good results we must properly understand our relation to the great impersonal power we are using. It is intelligent, and we are intelligent, and the two intelligences must co-operate.

We must not fly in the face of the Law expecting it to do for us what it can only do through us; and we must therefore use our intelligence with the knowledge that it is acting as the instrument of a greater intelligence; and because we have this knowledge we may and should cease from all anxiety as to the final result.

In actual practice we must first form the ideal conception of our object with the definite intention of impressing it upon the universal mind - it is this thought that takes such thought out of the region of mere casual fancies - and then affirm that our knowledge of the Law is sufficient reason for a calm expectation of a corresponding result, and that therefore all necessary conditions will come to us in due order.

We can then turn to the affairs of our daily life with the calm assurance that the initial conditions are either there already or will soon come into view. If we do not at once see them, let us rest content with the knowledge that the spiritual prototype is already in existence and wait till some circumstance pointing in the desired direction begins to show itself.

It may be a very small circumstance, but it is the direction and not the magnitude that is to be taken into consideration.

As soon as we see it we should regard it as the first sprouting of the seed sown in the Absolute, and do calmly, and without excitement, whatever the circumstances seem to require, and then later on we shall see that this doing will in turn lead to a further circumstance in the same direction, until we find ourselves conducted, step by step, to the accomplishment of our object.

In this way the understanding of the great principle of the Law of Supply will, by repeated experiences, deliver us more and more completely out of the region of anxious thought and toilsome labor and bring us into a new world where the useful employment of all our powers, whether mental or physical, will only be an unfolding of our individuality upon the lines of its own nature, and therefore a perpetual source of health and happiness; a sufficient inducement, surely, to the careful study of the laws governing the relation between the individual and the Universal Mind."

To my mind, then as now, this quotation outlines the core and center of the method and manner of approach necessary for coming in touch with Infinite supply. At least it, together with the previously quoted statement, "My mind is a center of Divine operation," etc., constituted the only apparent means of attracting to myself the twenty thousand dollars.

My constant endeavor to get into the spirit of these statements, and to attract to myself this needed sum, was about six weeks, at the end of which time I had in my bank the required twenty thousand dollars. This could be made into a long story, giving all the details, but the facts, as already narrated, will give you a definite idea of the magnetic condition of my mind while the twenty thousand dollars was finding its way to me.

My voice mail message, my email and my instant message programs all are automatically set to respond with something like, "Sorry I missed you. I'll get back to you on Monday."

I fight to keep my mind at rest and I still spend much of my Sunday thinking about what I’m going to do on Monday. But I can’t even describe how wonderful it is to not even have the option to act on it. Instead of running up to my computer “just one more time”, I can take a nap. Google stopped counting, or at least publicly displaying, the number of pages it indexed in September of 05, after a school-yard "measuring contest" with rival Yahoo. That count topped out around 8 billion pages before it was removed from the homepage. News broke recently through various SEO forums that Google had suddenly, over the past few weeks, added another few billion pages to the index. This might sound like a reason for celebration, but this "accomplishment" would not reflect well on the search engine that achieved it.

What had people buzzing was the nature of the fresh, new few billion pages. They were blatant spam - containing Pay-Per-Click (PPC) ads, scraped content, and they were, in many cases, showing up well in the search results. They pushed out far older, more established sites in doing so. A Google representative responded via forums to the issue by calling it a "bad data push," something that met with various groans throughout the SEO community.

How did someone manage to dupe Google into indexing so many pages of spam in such a short period of time? I'll provide a high level overview of the process, but don't get too excited. Like a diagram of a nuclear explosive isn't going to teach you how to make the real thing, you're not going to be able to run off and do it yourself after reading this article. Yet it makes for an interesting tale, one that illustrates the ugly problems cropping up with ever increasing frequency in the world's most popular search engine.

A Dark and Stormy Night

Our story begins deep in the heart of Moldva, sandwiched scenically between Romania and the Ukraine. In between fending off local vampire attacks, an enterprising local had a brilliant idea and ran with it, presumably away from the vampires... His idea was to exploit how Google handled subdomains, and not just a little bit, but in a big way.

The heart of the issue is that currently, Google treats subdomains much the same way as it treats full domains - as unique entities. This means it will add the homepage of a subdomain to the index and return at some point later to do a "deep crawl." Deep crawls are simply the spider following links from the domain's homepage deeper into the site until it finds everything or gives up and comes back later for more.

Briefly, a subdomain is a "third-level domain." You've probably seen them before, they look something like this: subdomain. domain. com. Wikipedia, for instance, uses them for languages; the English version is "en. wikipedia. org", the Dutch version is "nl. wikipedia. org." Subdomains are one way to organize large sites, as opposed to multiple directories or even separate domain names altogether.

So, we have a kind of page Google will index virtually "no questions asked." It's a wonder no one exploited this situation sooner. Some commentators believe the reason for that may be this "quirk" was introduced after the recent "Big Daddy" update. Our Eastern European friend got together some servers, content scrapers, spambots, PPC accounts, and some all-important, very inspired scripts, and mixed them all together thusly...

Five Billion Served - And Counting...

First, our hero here crafted scripts for his servers that would, when GoogleBot dropped by, start generating an essentially endless number of subdomains, all with a single page containing keyword-rich scraped content, keyworded links, and PPC ads for those keywords. Spambots are sent out to put GoogleBot on the scent via referral and comment spam to tens of thousands of blogs around the world. The spambots provide the broad setup, and it doesn't take much to get the dominos to fall.

GoogleBot finds the spammed links and, as is its purpose in life, follows them into the network. Once GoogleBot is sent into the web, the scripts running the servers simply keep generating pages - page after page, all with a unique subdomain, all with keywords, scraped content, and PPC ads. These pages get indexed and suddenly you've got yourself a Google index 3-5 billion pages heavier in under 3 weeks.

Reports indicate, at first, the PPC ads on these pages were from Adsense, Google's own PPC service. The ultimate irony then is Google benefits financially from all the impressions being charged to Adsense users as they appear across these billions of spam pages. The Adsense revenues from this endeavor were the point, after all. Cram in so many pages that, by sheer force of numbers, people would find and click on the ads in those pages, making the spammer a nice profit in a very short amount of time.

Billions or Millions? What is Broken?

Word of this achievement spread like wildfire from the DigitalPoint forums. It spread like wildfire in the SEO community, to be specific. The "general public" is, as of yet, out of the loop, and will probably remain so. A response by a Google engineer appeared on a Threadwatch thread about the topic, calling it a "bad data push". Basically, the company line was they have not, in fact, added 5 billions pages. Later claims include assurances the issue will be fixed algorithmically. Those following the situation (by tracking the known domains the spammer was using) see only that Google is removing them from the index manually.

The tracking is accomplished using the "site:" command. A command that, theoretically, displays the total number of indexed pages from the site you specify after the colon. Google has already admitted there are problems with this command, and "5 billion pages", they seem to be claiming, is merely another symptom of it. These problems extend beyond merely the site: command, but the display of the number of results for many queries, which some feel are highly inaccurate and in some cases fluctuate wildly. Google admits they have indexed some of these spammy subdomains, but so far haven't provided any alternate numbers to dispute the 3-5 billion showed initially via the site: command.

Over the past week the number of the spammy domains & subdomains indexed has steadily dwindled as Google personnel remove the listings manually. There's been no official statement that the "loophole" is closed. This poses the obvious problem that, since the way has been shown, there will be a number of copycats rushing to cash in before the algorithm is changed to deal with it.

Conclusions

There are, at minimum, two things broken here. The site: command and the obscure, tiny bit of the algorithm that allowed billions (or at least millions) of spam subdomains into the index. Google's current priority should probably be to close the loophole before they're buried in copycat spammers. The issues surrounding the use or misuse of Adsense are just as troubling for those who might be seeing little return on their adverting budget this month.

Do we "keep the faith" in Google in the face of these events? Most likely, yes. It is not so much whether they deserve that faith, but that most people will never know this happened. Days after the story broke there's still very little mention in the "mainstream" press. Some tech sites have mentioned it, but this isn't the kind of story that will end up on the evening news, mostly because the background knowledge required to understand it goes beyond what the average citizen is able to muster. The story will probably end up as an interesting footnote in that most esoteric and neoteric of worlds, "SEO History."

Columbus schools won t see vote in 2007

Voters in the Columbus Schools area who were hoping to see a ballot initiative in November will be disappointed. The Campaign for Ohio’s Future, a group made up of 12 separate educational groups, simply ran out of time to collect all the signatures needed to put their proposal on the 2007 November ballot. Supporters in the Columbus Schools had hoped that the proposal would shift financial obligations from the local community to the state, and improve the quality of public education.

Over 400,000 signatures were required; the group managed to collect 150,000 before deciding to put the program on the back burner. They say they will try again in 2008. But not everyone in Columbus Schools, or in Ohio, supports the proposal. One of the most notable opponents is Ohio Governor Ted Strickland. The Governor is seeking legislative methods to fix the problems of Ohio and Columbus Schools. Still, the disappointment felt by many in the Columbus Schools, and its surrounding communities, is apparent.

Bob Greenwood, superintendent of the East Guernsey district, about 80 miles east of Columbus Schools, has said, “It is very disappointing. We just had $8 million of cuts to balance our budget and are to the point where we can’t cut anymore.” This is concerning as Ohio and Columbus Schools strive to meet national mandates and stretch state funds. Ohio is currently 9th in the nation for graduation rates, and 15th in terms of teacher pay. Columbus Schools benefit from the $8,963 per pupil expenditure that places the state 16th highest in student spending.

Educators in Columbus Schools realize that in terms of national standards they are at the better end of the continuum, in terms of available funds. How to cope with nasty people at work

I worked for many years in an office environment and would have enjoyed the experience if it was not for a number of over bearing and annoying colleagues. These people seemed to spend the whole day bitching and gossiping about other people which can make life at work very stressful and uncomfortable.

After leaving school I was excited that I was now entering into the adult world. I was more than happy to leave behind me the childish ways of school life where people are constantly taking the mickey out of each other, which is apparently supposed to be fun and basically act like fools. This was certainly not what I saw as enjoyment.

I eventually obtained a position working for an insurance company where I would have to carry out basic office duties. I was slightly apprehensive as it was all new to me of course but what I found when I started to work their came as quite a shock. Some of these so called adults were also acting like they were still at school.

The males in the office were always at each others throats, throwing insults which I have to add were mainly in jest, and basically acting like they were fourteen years of age.

The women though were so annoying it was untrue. Of course it was not all of the women but just a handful of them. This however was enough to make it an uncomfortable place to work. These women were always ready to spread gossip about other people and were so two faced it was unbelievable.

As an example, I will tell you a story which I am now able to laugh about, but which at the time was quite hard to handle. I went out for a few drinks one night and in the bar, there was a woman who worked in the same office that I did. She was what I called, one of the bitches!

I went over and started talking to her. I had had a number of drinks and felt quite sociable. She had a friend with her who I have to say was very attractive and I also started to make small talk with her. I started to get on really well with this friend and thought that I had pulled etc.

After buying them both a drink I went to the toilet. Whilst I was in the toilets my friends warned this friend of my colleague not to get too close to me because I was gay (which I am not). They were just trying to ruin it for me, nice hey!

I came back to the group and both of these women had left to go somewhere else. I was most frustrated but was unaware of what had been said.

I went back to work the next day and people acted differently towards me. I later found out from a good friend that this colleague had told everyone that I was gay.

I have no problem with people who are gay and this incident showed me what it must be like for them at times.

I went up and told this woman exactly what I thought of her and warned her never to spread any rumours about me again, as it would be the last rumour she would ever spread, if she did etc.

The next few days were quite unpleasant as people were treating me like some kind of leper. I did not try to convince them that I was straight as it should not be an issue in the first place.

After this I went to work with the sole intention of doing my job, I do not need these type of people in my life.
