Wall sconces - great design ideas for your home

We all know that wall sconces are used for accent lighting, such as lighting up some picture or any other decorative feature on the wall. However its utility is much more than mere accent lighting. Wall scones can be effectively used for proper ambient lighting, like in restaurants and bed rooms, and also it could compliment any spot light fixture or lamp in a beneficial manner even though wall sconce falls short when it comes to spot lighting by itself. In such a design, the wall sconce not only reduces the amount of light required by the task light fixture, but also produces a more uniform light distribution thereby reducing glare and resulting eye strain to the occupants of the room.

Here are few tips as to how to incorporate wall sconces in the different rooms so as to improve its overall interior decoration element as well as the lighting aspects.

Let’s start with the dining room. Wall sconces can play a major role in enhancing the lighting and hence ambience of the dining room. Dining in poor light - may be with the exception of ‘candle light dinners’ - can be quite cumbersome most of the times. In most dining rooms, the lighting is provided by ceiling fixtures, such as chandeliers or pendants, which meanwhile lights up the table properly, the same also could create unwanted shadows on the other parts of the room. Installing wall sconces in the sides could compensate for the lack of light in those areas, and cancel off the undesired shadows created by the ceiling fixtures. If the wall sconces could double up as an illumination to your curio cabinet or other decorative figures on the wall as well, it’ll only boost the overall ambience and mood of the dining room and the mood of the guests.

In the living room as well, the same uses of wall sconces apply as in the dining room. It could negate undesired shadows, as well as throwing light over your treasured wall mounts, pictures, and other decorative features fixed on to the wall.

In the bathroom, walls scones placed on the either side of the mirror could provide uniform lighting on the face of the person if he stands in front of the mirror. Again, the USP here is the absence of shadows. It can be really awkward if one is not able to see his/her face properly while looking at the mirror. For proper lighting, the wall scones must be placed at least 6 feet above the ground, and must be ideally halogen bulbs.

Finally, in the hallways, which are traditionally the poorly lit places in most homes, wall scones could provide the much needed low lighting. For maximum usability, it is advisable that wall scones be used here for both lighting and decorative purposes, as in the living or dining room, such as lighting up a small mural painting from both the sides.

In short, wall scones add a unique element of sophistication and style to the rooms, and are not limited to the above mentioned rooms only. For example, wall scones could be used for ambient lighting in bedrooms as well. It is just about planning where to fix one.

Wall scones are available in the market in umpteen styles and shapes and prices. See any of the online shopping websites selling lamps and fixtures for some quick ideas.

Additional start up airlines are looming

:
Several months ago, in a related article, I made mention of two start up air carriers for the US market. Since then, both EOS Airlines and Maxjet Airways have taken flight and are successfully serving their passengers and making plans for future expansion. Beyond these two carriers, additional carriers are waiting to take their first flights. Let's take a look at some leading contenders.

Fly First Class -- This Florida based air carrier is planning to use Wilmington, NC as its base. With flights to Bermuda and London planned, the airline -- true to its name -- will offer only one level of service, first class. Expected first flight is sometime during the second quarter of 2006.

Primaris Airlines -- Already FAA approved and the owner of a single Boeing 757 aircraft which they currently are leasing to another carrier, Primaris placed an order in January 2005 for Boeing's new Dreamliner aircraft, also known as the 787. Before the first of these particular aircraft arrive in 2008, Primaris reportedly will be leasing three additional 757 aircraft and begin scheduled service between New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco by the middle of 2006.

Virgin America -- Pending government approval, Virgin America will fly upwards of 105 Airbus aircraft. Based in San Francisco, the Richard Branson inspired airline must overcome some hurdles first including convincing the US government that the airline is, indeed, mostly US owned.

Other start up carriers which are also being watched include: Blackstar Airlines, USA Jet Airlines, and Baltia Air Lines. All start ups must secure key funding, receive various federal and local governmental approvals, organize a management team, and commence hiring well before the first flight is made. It is this particular process that shakes out all the pretenders leaving behind carriers committed to making a go of it.

Alaska - more than just a block of ice

Alaska. Talk about a place that's gotten a bum rap. Half the world thinks it's part of Canada and the other half thinks it's just a big block of ice. Well, hold on to your fur coats because there is more to see and do in Alaska than you know.

For starters there's Kenai Fords National Park. Here you can go on a sightseeing cruise to visit some glaciers and see some marine wildlife. The ship sails out of Seward. The park is just 130 miles south of Anchorage. It is made of a range of coastal mountains which slowly sink into the ocean, transforming its former glacial valleys into long fjords with rocky and steep walls. Photos just don't do it justice. You have to see it in person.

While we're on the subject of parks, there's also Denali National Park & Preserve. It features North America's highest mountain, 20,320-foot tall Mount McKinley. The park is more than 6 million acres. Now THAT is a huge park. It comes complete with a sub arctic ecosystem featuring such animals as grizzly bears, wolves, Dall sheep, and moose.

Then there's the Alaska Sealife Center. It's a non profit marine science facility dedicated to understanding and maintaining the integrity of the marine ecosystem. In other words, they're doing everything they can to see that the fish don't end up belly up.

Speaking of fish, if you're into that sort of thing, there's the Homer Spit Fishing Hole. Here you can fish for kings and silvers right off the bank of the Homer Spit.

Then there's the Ididaride Dog Sled Tours in Seward, Alaska. Here you'll find three generations of top-20 Iditarod racers and fourteen generations of champion sled dogs. It was founded by Dan Seavey Sr. in 1965. His oldest son Mitch took over the racing program in 1982.

For those looking to get a bit of an education there's the UAF Institute of Marine Science Seward Marine Center which is a unit in the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. Yes, there is a lot of education in Alaska about Marine life. Considering fishing is one of their main industries it certainly makes sense. The park was established as Mt. McKinley National Park on 26 February, 1917. The original park was designated a wilderness area and incorporated into Denali National Park and Preserve in 1980. The Park was designated an international biosphere reserve in 1976.

Believe it or not, people DO have fun in Alaska. It's not just all ice and snow. There is a nightlife that would give any city a run for it's money.

One of the hottest spots in Alaska is "Club Oasis" located on Seward Highway. Here you'll find live music, great drinks and no cover charge. This is where those wild Alaskans really let their hair down.

Then there's Chilkoot Charlie's in Anchorage, Alaska where you'll find the famous Bird House Bar, great drinks, music, wild women and non stop fun. You can even cater private parties here.

Yes, Alaska certainly is more than just a chunk of frozen wasteland. When you're in the neighborhood stop on by. You may not want to leave.

Security i think i have a virus

Computers are awesome in their capabilities. They can supply intense graphics, audio, and powerful software applications. They can help you in business and entertain you from the visually intense screen in front of you.

Once you hook that computer up to the Internet you may be unintentionally inviting cyber bad guys to access information from your site. Through an Internet connection hackers may be able to access your information or company data. Spyware can mess up registries and attach themselves to files on your computer that can slow it down.

Viruses can creep in unexpectedly and cause the complete crash of your system. Viruses can also be used to redistribute the virus through your email system.

A friend of mine recently had an issue with a spyware program that attached itself following a brief power outage. That one instance caused him several weeks of problems with Internet connection and being able to conduct his business.

Every computer, but a business computer for certain, should have a variety of security safeguards in place to help you manage company data and keep your computers running at optimum speed and performance.

Virus Protection

Similar to human viruses the computer virus can infect your computer and you may not know about it until it has already done significant damage. By accessing virus protection you can provide a cyber antibiotic consistently that allows your computer to fight off unwanted viruses before they have a chance to shred data.

Pop Up Blocker

Some may view pop ups as an annoyance, but some pop ups may contain malicious code that could harm your computer. Many browser applications can allow you to stop pop ups from finding their way to your screen, It may be in your best interest to stop the pop.

Spyware

They want to know where you go and what sites you visit and they find their way onto virtually every computer that is online. They may not be overtly malicious, but when there are too many of them they can cause your system to come to a crawl.

You deserve your privacy online so it may be beneficial to download a spyware extractor and use it often.

Firewall

A firewall is a cyber tool that can help keep your computer uninviting to hackers. The firewall works to clock entrance to your system from outside, A hacker could still access your computer if they really want to, but if there is an easier target they may be inclined to leave your system alone.

Registry Cleaner

Although not a mandatory item a registry cleaner can help restore or fix registry data that can improve the speed on your computer. Essentially what spyware might take away a registry cleaner can restore for the benefit of your system.

It would be Cyber Utopia if the bad guys would simply leave the Internet alone, but they remain a consistent presence that makes the use of a broad range of security issues necessary for all online users.

Safe computing software may not just be a good idea it may be just what you need to save company data from those who don’t share your personal and professional values.

Do you have to earn your degree locally any longer

Thinking of upgrading your education? Or earning your first degree? It's a good idea in todays competitive job market place. Your competition, being other's seeking the same job as you, the resumes that generally get pushed to the top of the pile are those that have a college degree, or some other form of training directly related to the job in question.

Of course not all of us have had the luxury of being able to attend college, often for a variety of different reasons. Some didn't have the financial where abouts to make it happen, others had family to support. NO matter what your reason was before, you need to know that it's not a forever decision. There are changes happening today in the education sector that are making it possible for almost anyone to step up and earn their college degree. What are these changes?

Accredited online college degrees, and distance learning.

The distance learning market has been growing exponentially ever since the dawn of the Internet. It's quickly becoming the preferred option for retraining and adult education for those looking to change careers or seek a promotion within their current job. What's the big advantage? Flexibility! You don't need to live near a college, heck you don't even need a library close by to enroll for an online accredited college degree.

Students in Maine are enrolled in schools in Phoenix taking their classes and graduating often times without ever meeting their instructor or any classmates. Does this mean the quality of the degree is less? Or Employers will frown upon the fact that you earned your college degree online? Not a chance, employers recognize that todays world is fast moving and not very forgiving to those of us that need to attain some further education. By enrolling in an accredited online college degree program you're able to hold down your current full or part time employment and tend to your studies on your own terms, not those of some professor or college that sets class and lecture times.

Without a doubt, online distance education is a market that is going to continue to grow in the years to come. AS more and more baby boomers retire, there are more and more middle management and other skilled positions opening up. What do we need to have to be at the top of the list for that job? Experience, and education. One's hardly worth it without the other any more. So take some time and research accredited online college degrees in your area. Don't hesitate, because the quicker you enroll and start the process the sooner you'll graduate with your newly appointed degree.

Movie review mouth to mouth a cult perspective

Movie: Mouth to Mouth (2005)

Written and Director by Alison Murray

As a person interested in "group influence" it would be well worth anyones while to rent/buy the movie "Mouth to Mouth".

Based on the directors brief experience in Europe as part of cult the story centers around Sherry, a young runaway meets the radical street collective SPARK - Street People Armed with Radical Knowledge - while she is living on the streets of Europe. She travels through the continent in the SPARK van, recruiting members from street gangs and disenfranchised youth at raves and town squares and experiencing the group's giddy thrills as well as its punishing manipulations. Searching for a place to belong where she can still be herself, Sherry thinks she has found this in SPARK, but when her mother comes to find her, Sherry discovers that she must pay a heavy personal price for rebellion. Director, Alison Murray combines drama, suspense and choreographed movement in an intense, stylish and provocative look at youth culture, the struggles of parenthood, and the dark side of nonconformity.

What one can learn about "group influence" from this film is how easy it is to influence people when you offer them a sense of community and a little hope and encouragement.

The formula becomes very clear.

1) treat them as your friend and show interest in them as a person.

2) Act like you know what you're talking about.

3) Give them the idea that they are part of something bigger, a cause.

4) Enforce obedience to the group cause.

You can also learn how easy it is for a group leader to abuse the power that is given him.

All the characters in this movie have SOMETHING in them that we can empathize with, even the abusive cult leader.

Learn these problems now and you can avoid your cat becoming ill in the future

Cats, like any other animal out there, can become sick. There are several health problems that can affect your cat. If you have never owned one though you may not realize just what those can be. Knowing what to look for can protect your pet’s health.

The hairball is probably the most common of them. Cats will groom themselves and this allows loose hair to come off the pet and end up in the stomachs. Instead of passing easily, the hair can form a ball within the stomach. If your cat starts coughing and hacking he may have a hairball that he’s trying to expel. You can help prevent hairballs by grooming your cat frequently to remove the excess hair that will cause them. You can feed your cat food that will help to control it too. Even some cat treats are available to help you to keep your cat’s healthy.

Urinary tract infections are another common problem for many cats. These are particularly common in cats that are not neutered, especially males. If the cat stopped using his litter box, an infection can be the cause. If the cat’s urine smells strong, this can be a sign as well. In order to treat this condition, you will need to visit the vet. But, there are some cat foods out there that can help to limit the episodes of infection your cat will have.

Viruses

Cats can get viruses too. Some of these include the following: Feline Leukemia Virus, Feline Infectious Peritonitis, and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus.

FIP is a disease that is related to the Corona virus. This is a serious problem because there is no known treatment for the disease. Cats that test positive for it may not actually have it as Corona has the same results. There is a vaccine for FIP but many vets feel it is not very effective. The good news is that it is not easy for the cat to catch it.

FIV or cat AIC is not always something that will kill the animal. It is important to note that you can not catch HIV from a cat though.

FLV is a preventable condition if the cat has not been exposed to the virus before being immunized. Cats that have the disease will not die right away, most of the time, but it can shorten the life expectancy of the pet. It is important to keep other cats away from a pet that has this condition.

Worms are another problem that can affect your pet. These can be roundworms, tapeworms or hookworms. They can occasionally develop heart worms as well. Those cats that can not gain weight are infested with fleas and those who have white specks in their stool should be taken to the vet for testing for worms. If your pet does have worms, it can be fatal if it is untreated but most pets can be cured from it with a few doses of medication.

Another condition in which many cats that go outdoors will have is ticks. Symptoms include the pet being lethargic and acting like they are in pain. If you suspect that your pet may have this condition, make sure to take him to the vet to have them removed. Also, the vet will likely treat him for Lyme Disease which can be transmitted to you and your family as well as to pets by the ticks.

There are a number of useful websites that can give you information about diseases that affect your cat. However, it is essential that if you suspect your pet of having any of these conditions that you seek out the help of a vet right away.

Publicity and marketing the perfect niche for successful virtual assistants

We all realize how Virtual Assistants have revolutionized the way we work today. Most businesses now count on their Virtual Assistant the same as they used to count on their secretaries, only so much more. VAs are a prized and respected part of their client’s team, and unlike secretaries, who often were taken for granted, Virtual Assistants are praised for their professionalism and skills. Most businesses today can’t imagine where they would be without their VA. And as the potential for success in a virtual assistant business continues to explode, so does the need for good Virtual Assistants.

Today’s Virtual Assistants need to take pride in their business and also to learn as much as they can about their niche, which is the specialty they have chosen to specialize in. One niche that I highly recommend is to offer publicity and marketing services to clients. This is an area that is growing in leaps and bounds as more and more authors, businesses, and other professionals realize the need to market their business to get good publicity. A business can expand tremendously when hiring a Virtual Assistant to help them spread the word about their products or services. Also, authors today aren’t aware that once they write a book, that’s when the real work begins. They need to get the word out about their book in order for it to be successful. That’s where a good Publicity VA comes in.

Publicity and marketing is thrilling to say the least. There’s such a great rush when your client gets recognized in national magazines, or a TV station wants to do a segment on them and you helped them achieve this success. Or better yet, when your efforts start resulting in substantial increased sales for them. Clients will not only keep using your services, but also tell others about this new positive addition they have to their business. And best yet, you too get to feel that satisfaction as you are helping them achieve their goals.

One of my most successful tips is learning how to effectively use any publicity that a client receives. When clients get national attention in a magazine, newspaper, or TV Segment, or even on a popular website, it’s important to make sure that everyone is aware of this. A press release should immediately go out to announce their accomplishment. This release should be added to their website and also should go to all their local papers, radio stations, and TV networks. Media loves to highlight a success story of their locals, so make sure you get this out there as soon as you can. And you don’t have to wait for the publicity to happen. If your client lands a major TV segment, you can start sending this press out beforehand in order to get more media for when the event happens. You just want to make sure that the client is fairly confident the segment will air. Also, don’t worry if the segment gets bumped back, that often happens as breaking news takes priority. This can almost be a blessing, as then you get to do more publicity before the airdate.

It’s also important to follow-up with the reporters and let them know how much you appreciate the acceptance of your quotes for an article. When you go the extra step to show them your appreciation, they remember you when the next article comes up and they need help with more expert advice. Many reporters work for multiple magazines so one good ally can lead to lots of media exposure. Always keep your PR hat on. Learn to take any situation and turn it into good press for your clients and your business as well. Stay on top of current events and see if you have anything to offer. Whenever a story hits the press that any of my clients would have a connection to, I’ll send it right away. Having press releases already prepared for clients on their business is always a great help. How do you know about these events? Sign up for Google Alerts under the topics of interest and then whenever a story is written, you can follow-up with your press release or article to the reporter. It works! I also use ProfNet from PRNewswire, which allows me to get daily leads from major news outlets. You can also consider PRLeads.

It’s also important to learn how to write a good press release and article and also where to send those. Make sure that your press releases and articles are newsworthy and also something that interests the readers. When I write a release, I always think would I read this release? Would it interest me? If not, I doubt your target audience would be reading it either. Plus, be careful to sound too promotional. You can easily get your message across without sounding like an ad.

Publicity is a great niche for VAs. Want to learn more, join us May 17th, as we do a teleseminar with Joan Stewart, the Publicity Hound publicityhound. com/teleseminar. htm at 1:00 p. m. EST. Also, this teleclass will be recorded and make available afterward as well.

Smart travel tip 7 things to look out for when dealing with a travel agency

Many people are looking at price when searching for a discount travel agency, however, there are some other things you need to watch out for that can save you time, money and headaches when using a travel agency to plan your trip.

1) Check to see if the agency is a member of ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents). Agencies who are members must follow strict rules of conduct. If you should have a problem with your agency, it will be easier for you to file a complaint.

2) Make sure their offer isn’t too good to be true. The travel industry is very competitive and some agencies will promise you the moon. Make sure they can deliver what they promise before signing up.

3) The agency should disclose their full contact information. You should easily be able to find their name, address, phone number and email address. Call the phone number and see if a real person answers. If their contact information isn’t readily available, you should take your business elsewhere.

4) Some discount agencies will promise you low rates to get your business, then hit you with hidden fees. Since you are budgeting for your trip, you don’t want to be hit with a larger bill than you planned on. Be sure to get all agency rates and fees on paper to avoid surprises.

5) Respectable travel agencies will bend over backwards to make sure you are well taken care of, especially if you have medical needs while traveling. An agency out for a quick buck will not provide you with great customer service, so ask questions about how they will accommodate your special requests before signing.

6) A good travel agency will be there to help you during and after your trip to make sure everything is going smoothly. If you have a problem during your trip, the agency will be available to assist you. Fly by night services will disappear after you’ve handed over your money. Check out the agency’s reputation before you commit to a deal.

7) A good travel agency will have access to all kinds of information about the city and/or country you are visiting. They are one of the best insider travel tip resources around whether you need a business travel tip, family travel tip, an air travel tip, or a travel packing tip.

Relationship test - are you happier being alone

Many of us are of the types who are happy being alone. If such persons enter into any relationship it will invariably fail. Such loners want to be left alone and want no responsibility of others nor want others to take any responsibility of their. Are you one of them? Have you thought about this? Let us find out more.

What are the main characteristics of such people? The first is total independence. They want total independence both at home and even at work. They may leave many jobs unless they find one where no one bothers them. They want to live at home on their own terms. They dislike being told by anyone about how things should be done. Their self-esteem does not permit this. They cannot develop healthy relationships because they never tell others about what should be done. They never bother about how others perform nor want to get tied up with one person. They feel very uncomfortable if they have to do that.

Their space is most important to them. They want their space with them and never to be invaded by anyone at any time. These kind of people wonder about how people live together. They believe that their own way is the right way and want no advice on that.

If such people get into a relationship by any chance, the relationship will go through very tough times. Before entering into any relationship, one should watch for this behavior. If any one displays such behavior, please talk to him/her in detail and only after assuring yourself, enter into the relationship.

The quickest way to have a product to sell on the internet

Creating a product from scratch that you can sell on the Internet will take some time to do.

Writing a book, for example, can take weeks or months to complete. If you're not a writer, or if you've never written before - this can be a daunting task. You will either not start, or abandon it halfway.

However, you can instantly get a book to sell and keep most or all of the money you generate from it if you can find an author willing to sell you resell rights to his book. This is rare, but you may be lucky enough to find a few that you really like.

I'm using a book as an example here, but it can well be any product. I use books because of its awesome power of duplication that suits an Internet Business perfectly, especially when they're in electronic form (e-books). More on this duplication and leverage principles in upcoming issues (hang on to your seats, it'll BLOW your mind!).

Resell Rights can come with the product together (which means that you buy the product, and you can immediately resell it), or you can buy it separately from the product (which means that you buy the product, and then the resell rights to it so that you can resell it).

Either way - you can now have an INSTANT product by just paying for the resell rights. Then all you concentrate on is setting up your Internet Business, and marketing it to your Prospects.

You've cut short your time by weeks or months in not having to create a product of your own.

Resell Rights

Books with Resell Rights usually come in 2 flavors:

1. Basic Resell Rights

Here you have the right to resell the book to your Customers, but your Customers have no right to resell them.

2. Master Resell Rights

Here you have the right to resell the book to your Customers, as well as the right to resell the Basic Resell Rights itself to your Customers. Your Customers who buy both the book and the Basic Resell Rights can then resell the same book to THEIR Customers. Sometimes Master Resell Rights are bundled together with the purchase of the book only.

This means that you don't have to pay separately for Master Resell Rights.

Depending on your objectives, either type of Resell Rights can be suitable for you. If you don't want to have too many competitors, Basic Resell Rights is the right one for you. If you want to have many competitors, then Master Resell Rights is right for you.

It boggles the mind of some people who can't understand why anybody would want to create more competition for himself.

The simply answer is this - the more competition you have, the more money you will make!

I reveal this totally amazing concept in my awesome Mini-Encyclopedia at HowToMakeRealMoneyOnline. com which contains eye-popping, jaw-dropping and heart-stopping information on 19 different Killer Internet Business Models as practised by TOP Entrepreneurs from around the world.

Discover what to do, step by step, and what tools and software you require to get your Internet Business up and running without having to waste your time and money doing the wrong things, from the beginning.

I've spent 9 years creating it, and it actually formed part of my full 4-day Boot Camp that my attendees currently pay $2,000 or more each to attend.

At only $97 WITH Master Resell Rights as a bonus to it - this means that ANYBODY can buy a copy, and they can immediately resell it - as can their Customers, and their Customers' Customers, and so on.

As I've mentioned earlier - the more Customers you have who can resell this Mini-Encyclopedia, and the more Customers THEY have who can do the same thing - the MORE money YOU can make!

If you can't wait for the next issue to find out how, buy it now and find out how this is accomplished! You'll see this concept on the Download Page itself.

How to get your kids to be more active

Mia Hamm, U. S. Olympic gold medalist and World Cup soccer star; Jennie Finch, U. S. Olympic gold medalist and Chicago Bandits softball star; and Vince Carter, U. S. Olympic gold medalist, NBA All-Star, and New Jersey Nets basketball star, are encouraging kids across the country to run, jump, skip, bike and dance their way to the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day. As national champions of the Get 60 program, these celebrity athletes are challenging five million kids to get the daily amount of physical activity recommended by the U. S. Department of Agriculture's new MyPyramid for Kids. Get 60, part of the Get Kids in Action partnership between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) and The Gatorade Company, is designed to identify proven solutions to encourage kids to be more active and reduce childhood obesity.

"There is no more important message that athletes can send to kids today than to get up, get active and enjoy what you're doing," said Mia Hamm. "As a former UNC student-athlete, I support Get 60 because I am as passionate about encouraging kids to get active as I am about winning on the soccer field."

Children everywhere can participate in the Get 60 program at GetKidsinAction. org. Mia Hamm, Jennie Finch and Vince Carter will serve as mentors to help children log their physical activity each day and will provide encouragement and ideas to help them reach their goal. Parents can also visit the resource-rich Web site to learn about how they can take a more active role in their child's health.

Get Kids in Action offers the following tips for parents to help their families lead a healthy, active lifestyle and inspire their children to get 60 minutes of physical activity each day:

• Encourage your child to try a new activity, such as dancing, karate or an organized sport.

• Provide your child with active toys and games.

• Allow time for active play with friends, especially time outdoors.

• Plan active family weekends to hike, bike or swim together.

• Involve your children in active household chores.

• Walk or bike with your child to and from school.

• Create weekly family physical activity and nutrition goals.

• Limit television viewing, video games and other screen time to less than two hours a day.

Proven Success

Student-athletes at universities across the country will work closely with children for six weeks to help them identify activities they will be good at and enjoy. The student-athletes will lead kids in a weekly physical activity session and help them log their physical activity on an Activity Tracker to monitor and recognize their progress.

Pilot studies have shown that Get 60 works. After six weeks of visits from UNC student-athletes, 82 percent of children reported achieving 60 minutes of physical activity per day, a significant increase compared to 14 percent at the beginning.

Power tips to selecting corporate christmas gifts

During the holiday season it is expected that the person in charge of the business will provide a Christmas gift for the employees as well as some of the top business contacts they work with. It takes some time to determine what people want so you can offer the right corporate Christmas gifts. You want them to be a hit with everyone.

Of course the amount of money you have to spend on corporate Christmas gifts needs to be taken into consideration. The number of gifts you have to buy is also something to consider. There will also be some of your employees and business contacts that choose not to celebrate the holiday and you will want to be respectful of that.

You have the option of choosing one type of corporate Christmas gift and then giving it out to everyone on your list. You can also choose to make the gifts more personal by selecting them specifically for each person on your list. If you choose to personalize gifts, make sure you spend the same amount of money on each person.

Purchasing the Corporate Christmas Gifts

You may find it beneficial to get a personal assistant or a group of volunteers to help you with the issue of corporate Christmas gifts. If you work for a very large company then you really don't want to try to take care of it all on your own. Having more people involved means that you can get a broader idea of the type of gifts to purchase as well.

If you are operating a very small business then you will likely want to handle the gift buying on your own. The employees and business contacts will appreciate this personal touch. If you have a business that specializes in a particular area, you can even honor them with one of your products that you sell to consumers. Even if you offer employee discounts on purchases they still may not have had the money to buy it yet.

Corporate Christmas Gifts for your Business Contacts

One of the best types of corporate gifts is to provide them with a gift basket. You can make it yourself with a variety of different products from your own business. You can also have the gift basket custom made for you. There are some retailers that offer different sizes of gift baskets for sale if you don’t want to provide them with gifts that are specifically company related.

Put plenty of time and thought into what you will give for corporate Christmas gifts. You want them to be appreciated and used by those that receive them. Don’t wait until the last minute or you will stress yourself out. If you really can’t come up with any good ideas ask for suggestions from employees. You may decide to give them a personalized card with some bonus cash as their gift.

The internet is a terrific resource when it comes to the concept of corporate Christmas gifts. You will also be able to take a look at the prices offered on various items. This is one of the best ways to find the perfect corporate Christmas gifts to share with your employees and your business contacts.

The nightshift

Sleepless in Seattle brings on new meaning when staying up all night has nothing to do with another person but rather the shameless addiction of the written word. I would love to be a day person at some point, maybe when I grow up because I do miss that late morning air however, the night dawns so quickly thus my day begins.

Like a ghost I prowl the halls and corners at night searching myself for that next article or some great witty words that will stand out among the thousands. The right word that will make a difference in someone's life between crossing the line or playing it safe. The article that will either entice the customer to read more or to move on.

Writing at night leads to solitude and serenity which delivers to the hand the thought processes that fills the mind from happenings during the day. Every now and then you have to take a stroll to get the oxygen flowing from the brain. Like a vampire sucking every word that I can pen; writers block is not pretty. As I wake a family member while roaming the badlands they wonder what is wrong with me. As my family watches by day I keep guard over them at night; sounds pretty safe to me.

Writing is not for everyone. You either have it or you don’t. You can train someone who has it to be better however for those that just don’t get it, should not try this at home. You have nights where the words just flow but then you have long sleepless nights trying to figure out what to put down. It has to come natural, like being a musician, you hit the notes or you don’t. You drive your family nuts with what is your first love as they continue to urge you to get some sleep.

What am I going to do in the day that I can’t do at night? Become a part of the early birds, in which society thinks of as “normal.” Yeah I’ve heard all the aphorisms, early bird gets the worm. Can’t soar with the eagles if you hoot with the owls at night. Tell me who says that hooting with owls is a bad thing? Do you ever think I can change from being like a ghost, a vampire, a night watchman or a scribe? Probably not so for now, I’m on the nightshift.

The psychology of diet preparation

We decide to lose weight because of any number of reasons: we don’t like the way we look, our clothes don’t fit, our health is in danger, our significant other is wandering, our job is at risk, or our kids are embarrassed. We tend to think of weight loss as something that involves only our body; surely no one ever decided to lose weight because of a fat brain or a bloated mind.

Yet “we decide” is a mental function. When and why we make such a decision depends on our mind, not our body. We may make the decision when we are five pounds heavier than we would like, or after passing the two hundred pound mark and entering true medical obesity. The actual size of the body does not trigger the decision to lose weight, such a choice in made in the brain.

Since the start (and the continuation) of a diet program is a mental process, it would seem to be worthwhile to explore what factors might trigger such a decision.

1. Self-Image.

Each of us has a dual image: the face we turn to the world and our internal idea of how we appear. Although we dress and groom ourselves in an effort to be seen as attractive by others, we are far less influenced by others than by our satisfaction, or dissatisfaction, with ourselves.

Explore this concept by observing yourself and others over the course of the next week. You will notice that you often receive compliments on clothes you wear that, to you, don’t feel “quite right.” Wear a favorite outfit that fits perfectly, that you think looks outstanding, and that makes you feel especially dashing – and no one notices! The same phenomenon occurs with a hairstyle. One morning, rushed for time, you can’t get your hair to do anything so you angrily pull it back with clips and hope that no one important sees you looking so awful. Voila! Three people comment that they like what you’ve done with your hair.

There is the same disconnect when it comes to our weight. If we look good in our mind’s eye, we don’t feel fat, even if friends and coworkers are whispering about our steady weight gain. However, if we see ourselves as overweight, no amount of reassurance from those around us is going to make us feel less fat. Carried to the extreme, this mental picture of our body size can lead to the eating disorder anorexia nervosa in which painfully thin individuals continue to dangerously restrict their caloric intake because they consistently see themselves as too heavy.

We decide to go on a diet, therefore, in response to our internal self-image. Some of the benefits we envision that go along with being slim and fit do take others into account: I will be more attractive to the opposite sex; I’ll be noticed at work when it’s time for a promotion; my family and friends will be jealous and will have to re-evaluate me as a stronger person than they had thought. But the real payoff for getting in shape is what it does for us personally. It is the desire to feel great about ourselves that carries us through the pain and monotony of diet and exercise. It is the future vision of ourselves in our mind that spurs us toward our goal. Losing that vision, or concluding that we won’t feel that much better about ourselves, are the reasons we give up and fall back into the relative comfort of settling for just “okay.”

2. Body versus Mind dominance.

We all wage a lifelong internal battle between our body and our mind. Each is dominant at different stages of development. As infants, we are little more than a collection of sensations. We explore the exciting new world around us through touching everything within reach, tasting everything we can put into our mouths, watching the movements of everything around us, and listening to all the sounds we hear until we eventually learn to imitate them.

As we move into our early school years, we start to concentrate on our minds. We voraciously devour immense amounts of information. We learn to read and our world expands its boundaries by a thousand percent. We learn to use the Internet and a limitless universe is at our fingertips.

Then we move into puberty and, overnight, our appearance becomes the dominating factor in our everyday lives. We navigate the pitfalls and pleasures of adolescence where popularity and being cool are so much more vital than mere learning or mental development. We spend an inordinate amount of time on our bodies. We try new clothes, new hairstyles, and new makeup. We have body parts pierced and undergo the pain of a tattoo because it will make us stand out. We primp, and groom, and force ourselves into the styles our peers have judged as “in.”

As we mature, we seek to balance our mental and physical selves. While our bodies reign supreme in the attract-a-mate environment, we need to exercise our minds to advance our careers and to develop deep relationships that move far beyond mere physical attraction.

It is when we settle down, and start to build the good life we want, that our efforts and energies turn towards things outside ourselves: children, significant others, friends, family, and work pursuits. We have so much happening around us and so much to do that we lose touch with both our bodies and our minds. We slip into our own comfort zone where so many of our needs are fulfilled by food. It eases our anxiety, relieves our frequent frustrations, and makes periodic bouts of the blues bearable. It oils our social interactions. It becomes a vital cog in how we demonstrate affection for those we love. We continue to see ourselves as we have always been and ignore the love handles and pockets of fat that attach themselves to parts of our body we resolutely ignore. Our bodies, and our internal image of our bodies, become more and more discordant.

3. Our sense of self-efficacy.

Self-efficacy is a term used in psychology to describe an individual’s belief that any action they take will have an effect on the outcome. It is not self-confidence, nor a belief that one is competent to do something, although it may involve both. It reflects our inner expectation that what we do will effect the results we want.

If I lack this belief, then I fear that whatever I do will not bring about my desired goal. Bordering on helplessness, it leads to self-defeating thoughts:

“No matter how carefully I diet, I don’t lose weight . . .” “I could work out every day but I’ll never get rid of these thunder thighs . . .” “I try to eat healthier foods but my hips just keep on spreading . . .” “No matter what techniques I try, nothing is going to keep the wrinkles away . . .”

If I have a strong sense of self-efficacy, my belief system and thought patterns will sound like:

“All I have to do is get motivated and I can whip my body into shape in a few weeks . . .” “I just need to pick a date to start my diet and I’ll be on my way . . .” “I may have neglected myself for a while but some hard work will bring me back . . .”

Whether or not we start a diet, decide to get in shape, or start taking better care of ourselves is, ultimately, a personal decision which may, or may not, be made as we have planned. The difference lies in the expectation of success and it is always easier to set out on a journey we anticipate will be successful than it is to drag ourselves toward a goal where failure is the most likely outcome.

How can we combine these concepts to work for us in our desire to become slim, fit, and attractive?

We begin by examining our self-image and how we appear to others. Merely asking others “Do you think I’m getting too heavy?” doesn’t work unless you have a brutally honest friend or you ask someone who dislikes you. Most of us are culturally trained to spare others’ feelings so responses to such a question are more likely to be polite than true.

Concentrating on specifics can produce better feedback. Tell everyone that you’re completing a survey for a class you’re taking. Hand out a brief one page questionnaire requiring that each friend or coworker list three adjectives to describe different aspects of your physical appearance. Complete one of the sheets yourself. Make sure that the answers are anonymous by requesting that no names be used and having someone else collect the completed sheets.

Once you have the responses back, compare them to your own answers and see where the descriptions diverge. You may find yourself becoming a little defensive: “My hips aren’t that big . . . my clothes do too make me look slim.” This isn’t an exercise to make you feel bad about yourself nor for you to gloat over the unexpected complimentary remarks you received. It is an organized effort to help you identify where your self-image and your image-in-the-world move apart. Those areas of divergence are a place to start in the effort to make the two images overlap.

Once the areas where work is needed have been identified, it is time to call on the immeasurable strength of our wonderful mind to start imposing the structure and organization we are going to need to effect the desired changes. Our mind can only get us where we want to go if it is supported by a belief in our ability to bring about a successful conclusion. Now is the time to dismiss any expectations of failure. There may have been many unsuccessful dieting and fitness attempts in the past. Leave them in the past. We are not somehow doomed to continue unproductive behaviors forever. We possess that jewel of evolution, the human mind, which is capable of just about anything. If we set our mind to any task, it will accomplish it, if our doubts and misgivings don’t get in its way.

We build up our positive expectations by exploring our memories to pile up a long list of prior successes. There may be major benchmarks such as bringing about a promotion we wanted, orchestrating a fantastic event, or working ourselves into an intensely satisfying relationship. However, the small personal triumphs count the most but are usually quickly forgotten or discounted as unimportant.

Studying hard and obtaining a good grade in a difficult class clearly demonstrates your ability to bring about the results you want. Go for quantity: the day you smiled at someone across a smoky room and ended up with a brief but lovely affair; the report you brought in on time which no one expected; the night you mastered a spin on ice skates. Keep going: making the drill team, shooting a stolen basket, making your own prom dress, dying your hair a wonderful color in your own bathroom, catching a fly ball, figuring out new software on your computer, burning your first CD. The list can be endless and will be, as you keep remembering snippets of the past that you had long buried under more important things.

Keep this list close by and read it regularly. It is your personal self-efficacy pep squad.

You now know the areas you are going to work on and are developing a belief in the effectiveness of your own efforts. Now you need to identify the internal rewards that successful weight loss will bring. Feeling good about yourself, enjoying stepping on a scale, and easily zipping up your clothes are easy starters. Unselfconsciously walking to the pool in a brief suit is a reinforcement to dream about. Making a sales presentation with the confidence that you are looking your absolute best is an image to relish as you fall asleep. Seeing someone you love watch you admiringly, or seeing your competitive coworker jealous, underscores your resolve and keeps you going through the discomfort of dieting and the demands of boring exercise routines.

You know where you’re going, you know what it’s going to take, and you know you’re going to be successful. Your mind is fully prepared, simply awaiting your day of decision. You’ll make that decision whenever you choose because you are now in control.

Never underestimate the power of the forum

If your traffic exchange has a forum, get comfortable using the exchange and then, join it! Forum posts are a way to connect with other marketers and just as in offline business, networking is what online marketing is all about. When people get to know you, they trust you and this may spark them to buy your product or join the program you’re promoting. And, it’s always a great way to make new friends.

The first thing you must do after joining a forum is to introduce yourself to the other members of the group. Usually, this will include information about the area where you live, what your interests are, and a blurb about being happy to be in the forum. Keep it simple and allow veteran members to welcome you. Then, respond to their comments or questions. It’s a great way to get your feet wet and to satisfy the “getting to know you” requirement of most forums.

Then, just read posts for a while. Old-timers in a forum, those who have been members a while, can often be great sources of information. You can learn a great deal just by reading posts, especially if the forum is very active. Take advantage of the free tutoring. It’s worth its weight in platinum.

Another advantage of posting to a forum is that you are usually able to use a signature file, meaning a link to a program or product you’re promoting underneath your signature. This is a great way to advertise! Your link attaches to every post you make or will ever make and it will add up to a lot of free advertising over time. Just be sure to follow the rules about posting sig lines. Some forums allow several, while others may allow none at all, and the last thing you want to be is a forum rule breaker. The members will never let you forget, if you do it consistently over time.

Don’t become a forum lizard, either. Posts that have no substance are generally frowned upon. These are the “Yahoo!” posts or the “Sure, I agree,” posts with no relevant comments to legitimize them. Don’t spend all your time in forums, either. Find a thread or two that interest you and post something important to those. Reading every post by every member can take up most of your day in large forums, if you allow it. Just be involved enough to become known as someone whose point of view holds interest by providing food for thought, interesting URLs on a topic, or especially humor, if you’re able to write funny things without being corny. Forum members won’t mind if you post once or fifteen times, if what you have to say resonates.

Traffic exchanges have many features, and you should explore all of them. If the exchange has a forum, get in there and make some posts, even if it’s only to respond to what others have posted. First, read the terms and conditions of the forum and read some posts before you go barging into someone else’s living room. Get a feel for the tone of its posters. And never post ads, unless the forum has a specific board for doing so. That’s a big no-no and will get you into trouble. But don’t be shy. People in forums are generally nice and very helpful, and networking is what n-e-t-w-o-r-k marketing is all about!

Minneapolis public schools lose students to charter schools

Students are Fleeing Minneapolis Schools

Minneapolis schools are being faced with the prospect of empty school buildings as more and more students flee the system to charter schools in the district. Minneapolis schools’ enrollment figures have plummeted to just 36,000 this year - that’s almost half its capacity of 50,000 students. Schools in the north side have felt the pinch the hardest with a 44 percent drop in enrollment over the past five years. All indications are that there is no stemming this tide and Minneapolis schools have already announced plans to close 5 schools leaving more than 2000 students in the lurch, desperately scrambling to find new schools.

The Exodus of Blacks and Minorities from Minneapolis Schools

A bulk of the students that chose to leave Minneapolis public schools belongs to high poverty black neighborhoods and other minority communities. The statistics reveal a strong yet disturbing trend. In the ’99-’00 academic year, more than 48,000 black students sought admission in Minneapolis schools. Compare this to the bleak picture painted for 2008 when enrollment from black students is expected to touch barely 33,500.

Most black students prefer to enroll at charter schools in the district which have perceived higher standards than public Minneapolis schools. This problem of “black flight” is, authorities agree, a serious problem for Minneapolis schools. Surveys in the African American community show that black parents in general tend to be dissatisfied with the quality of education in Minneapolis public schools. Not that they have any reason to feel differently. In 2005, barely 29 % of black students in the eighth grades in Minneapolis schools managed to pass basic math tests and just 47% could manage to scrape through the reading tests. Graduation rates for black students at Minneapolis schools were some of the lowest at fifty percent. Besides blacks, Asian students are joining the growing movement out of Minneapolis schools.

Moves to Stem the Tide at Minneapolis Schools

The success of charter schools can be traced to a number of factors. School sizes are smaller, and it is generally believed that teaching staff are more in tune with students’ requirements and are better able to meet these needs. Minneapolis schools have begun to realize that immediate steps have to be taken to avoid the current migration of students. School authorities have proposed initiatives that require schools in the district to offer additional emphasis on music, arts, and language besides improving their core academic curricula. It’s hoped that raising the bar on academic learning will stem the growing tide. Even if the schools do not succeed in attracting students back to their fold, one hopes that at the very least they will be able to stop students leaving in masses.

In america there are two tax systems

"In America there are two tax systems, one for the informed and one for the uninformed. Both systems are legal."

One of America's most famous jurists, Justice Learned Hand made this statement over forty years ago. When used today, one would certainly have to include the little understood world of Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA’s). The point I am making here is that we all need to keep ourselves informed about what IRA alternatives are available to us. Being uniformed about these IRA alternatives almost certainly means we are not taking full advantage of the opportunity to secure better returns on our retirement dollars.

The vast majority of Americans have since their (IRA's) introduction in 1974 allowed our IRAs and 401Ks to be directed by someone else, such as the friendly Broker and their Wall Street affiliates. This easygoing very passive approach "let someone else do the work for me" attitude may well have continued forever had it not been for the Wall Street crash of 2000. With more than a trillion dollars lost in IRA and 401K equity alone, it challenged the very way we viewed Wall Street.

The clear fact is if we Americans had known or understood back in 1974 that our IRAs and 401K's could be used to purchase real estate related items like Tax Lien Certificates, Tax Deeds and Mortgage Notes, millions of American baby boomers would today be retiring with vast sums of cash and assets inside of their IRAs and 401Ks.

NASDAQ reported on March 10, 2005 that it had risen to 59% of what it was five years earlier! This means $100,000.00 invested in NASDAQ listed companies in 1999 would be worth something like $59,000.00. That's very sad, but it’s where most Americans are today. Magazine, newspaper and television advertising campaigns have created the illusion to millions of Americans that those Wall Street products were the only financial products you could buy. This is not the fact and as outlined above Wall Street has not preformed too well over the last 30 years.

Real Estate on the other hand has out performed everything over the last 30 years by a very long way. IRAs and 401K's in general have over ninety percent of their funds in financial products. This may well lead you to ask "Why?” Are those Wall Street financial products superior in any way to real estate investments?" No! Here are some quotes taken from two very repected publications:

"... since the major housing organizations began keeping records in the 1960s, there has never been a year in which the average existing U. S. residence lost value. Not a one. "FORTUNE Magazine, August 12, 2002

"It is striking that after the longest, strongest bull market in history, the average American built more wealth owning a home than investing in the stock market ."DENVER Post, March 14, 2002

After reading these quotes, it really is hard to understand why our IRAs and 401K's are not 90% real estate versus 10% Wall Street products. Maybe it’s time for all of us to get just a little more informed about those hard earned dollars before it’s too late!

Heart attack prevention tips

While some have to fight the battle of the bulge for mere shallow reasons, there are those who do all the dieting and exercising to reduce their cholesterol levels just to stay alive. And while cholesterol is an important component of the membranes of cells, playing an important part in maintaining brain synapses as well as in the immune system, it is also the largest cause of heart attack and stroke.

While it is great that most people who are suffering from high levels of cholesterol go to their dieticians to have their daily eating habits tweaked by following a strict meal plan in order to help them lower their cholesterol levels (hopefully back to normal levels), some people have really gone overboard, but if you feel compelled to lower your cholestorol, consult with your doctor, most doctors are fine with prescribing cholesterol reducing drugs.

When coupled with a healthy diet and regular exercise, the drugs can make quite a difference in your cholesterol levels, at least enough that your levels can be considered safe.

There are four kinds of cholesterol reducing drugs:

1. Bile acid

Sequesterants are cholesterol reducing drugs that aim to bind with the bile that is being produced by one’s liver. The bile helps out in our digestion as well as in the absorption of fats from the intestine. This cholesterol reducing drug blocks out the digestion of fats from the bile to help prevent the formation of cholesterol. Various cholesterol reducing drugs in this category are the following:

- Colestipol

- Colestid

- Coleseyalam

- Welchol

- Cholestyramine

- Questran

2. Statins

Popularly known as statins, the HMG-CoA inhibitors are cholesterol reducing drugs that prevent the enzyme called 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-conenzyme, a reductase, from converting fat into cholesterol. This cholesterol reducing drug is seen as the most effective one in the market today and does some added good to one’s body as 2003 reports claim that people with heart failure but no coronary artery diseases receive great benefits from this in as early as 14 weeks.

Popular drugs from this cholesterol reducing drug group include:

- Simvastatin

- Zocor

- Cerivastatin

- Baycol

- Fluvastatin

- Lescol

- Lovastatin

- Mevacor

- Prevastatin

- Pravachol

- Atorvastatin

- Lipitor

3. Fibric Acid

The cholesterol reducing drug called fibric acid and its derivaties are less effective than the statins when in comes to lowering one’s cholesterol level.

Popular drugs under this kind of cholesterol reducing drugs are:

- Clofibrate

- Atormid-S

- Gemfibrozil

- Lopid

- Fenofribrate

- Tricor

4. Niacin

Niacin, or vitamin B-3, also is effective in lowering cholesterol levels. Although the normal vitamin dose of niacin is only set at 20 mg for each day, the dose required to reduce cholesterol levels is at least 500 mg each day. Niacin helps reduce cholesterol by inhibiting very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) secretion in the bloodstream.

Website security rules explained

2006-2007 has been the years that online shopping has come into its own with online consumers spending a record $65.1 billion in merchandise via the web. More and more people are getting comfortable with online shopping and are engaging in online shopping, research and exploration of various membership and subscription sites.

Unfortunately, the chances of becoming a victim of Internet fraud also increases with every site where personal information is places. The Internet National Fraud Center Watch recently reported that the average loss due to fraud the first six months of 2006 was $2,579. This is compared to the $895 average for all of 2005. Complaints relating to general merchandise purchases (goods never received or misrepresented) accounted for 30% of Internet fraud complaints, and auction purchases (goods never received or misrepresented) topped the list at 44%.

One of the big scams in 2006-2007 is the investment scam. Investing has always been thought of as a good way to build a nest egg for retirement, but there are so many investment schemes offered via the Internet that you don't really know which one is correct for you. Further, there are so many schemes that, while they appear legitimate, are pure scams. If you take your time, do a lot of research prior to signing on to something and don't get taken in by the hype, you can make wise decisions and avoid losing your money to fraud.

Many e-commerce sites are trustworthy and have taken the necessary safety measures to shield you, but it still never hurts to proceed cautiously. If you decide to make an online purchase consider these simple steps:

1. Make all purchases with one credit card, preferably with a low credit limit. Avoid using an ATM or debit card because that's money taken directly from your account.

2. Be wary of unsolicited offers by sellers. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. The Internet National Fraud Information Center Watch reported that email scams was up 22% in 2006.While the offer may seem legitimate, spammers and phishers like to use this tactic to side-step reputable sites that provide consumer protection for online purchases. They will send you to a site that looks just like the real thing. You put in your information and you are a victim in about 3 seconds. If you get an email asking you to confirm our Paypal, eBay or bank account information, whatever you do, DON'T CLICK ON THE LINK IN THE EMAIL. Go to the site directly by typing in the site name, and see if there is anything related to the email. In 99.9% of the time, it is not. It's a fraud waiting to steal your personal information. You can also tell that the email is fake because it won't have your name in it.

3. Use only reputable e-commerce websites that list a street address and telephone number in case you need to contact them directly. If you look all over the website, and you can't find bona fide contact information, move cautiously. You wouldn't go into a store with no sign or street address, would you? Well, this is no different. If you can't find a number that connects to a human being and an address, keep on looking.

4. Read the website's privacy policy. Some websites may reserve the right to sell/give your information to a third party. Check the document to see if they allow an opportunity to "opt-out" of receiving special offers from third-party vendors or for permission to share your personal information. If you want your name sold to a ton of people you don't know, then don't take this extra precaution. If they do it, and there isn't a place to opt-out, move on. It's not worth the amount of spam you will receive.

5. In the lower right-hand corner of your browser should be a small lock icon which indicates that the site is secure. Also, do not provide your personal information if the website address doesn't start with "https" on that checkout page. This isn't on the whole site, but wherever you are putting your credit card must have these two things in place. If you can't find it or you see an unlocked lock icon, don't put your personal information and credit card information in there. While the company may be completely legitimate, it is not secure. On the web, you can't take that chance. Find an alternative way to shop with them if you really want to.

6. Choose only verified sellers. Check to see if the vendor is a verified member of a reputable third party such as the Better Business Bureau, VeriSign, or Guardian eCommerce. These third-party sites help to ensure online consumers will be protected when shopping or conducting e-commerce transactions.

Shopping on the Internet can be both convenient and fun, if you take the proper precautions. Simply know the rules of the road and what you should be looking for on websites, and you should have no trouble. If you do, contact the Better Business Bureau.

Tarzana ca - relocation information

:
Tarzana

Location

It is surrounded by Reseda to the north, Woodland Hills to the west, Encino to the east, and the Santa Monica Mountains to the south. Major thoroughfares include Reseda Boulevard, Tampa Avenue, Wilbur Avenue, Burbank Boulevard and the commercial backbone of the south San Fernando Valley, Ventura Boulevard.

Most of Tarzana's inhabitants live in the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains south of Ventura Blvd. North of Ventura, there is a uniquely designed area meant to emulate a more rural setting called Melody Acres. Tarzana contains two country clubs (with golf courses) nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains: El Caballero Country Club and Braemar Country Club. At the remote southern end of Reseda Blvd., there are a number of luxurious gated communities, including Mulholland Park, Silverhawk Ridge, Monte Verde and Braemar Estates.

North of the Boulevard, where a smaller portion of the population lives, there are fewer houses and more apartment buildings. Tarzana extends to Victory Boulevard, though only a small percentage of the population lives in the area.

Residents

There are approximately 28,484 residents. According to the 2000 U. S. Census, the racial composition was predominantly White (78.9%), followed by Asian (5.6%), and Black or African American (3.8%).

American Indian or Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander each constituted less than one percent (0.3% and 0.1% respectively) of the population. 13.1% identified themselves as Hispanic or Latino. About 35.2% of the population in 2000 was foreign-born, including 21.9% that were born in Iran and 10.6% in Mexico.

Tarzana features a burgeoning Iranian-American population, and the community is well known for its Persian restaurants, booksellers, and language training institutes.

A thriving and long-established Jewish community attends four synagogues and provides the customer base for the first and only branch of the Hebrew language bookseller Steimatzky constructed outside of Israel. A number of popular and well-regarded delicatessens can be found in Tarzana, such as the Tarzana Armenian Grocery and Mort's Deli.

Notable residents include comedian Jeremy Hotz, actor Jamie Foxx, actor Chuck Norris, filmmaker John-Erik Jordan, KROQ's Kevin, Bon Jovi gutairist Richie Sambora his wife, actress Heather Locklear and frequent Star Trek guest star Hana Hatae.

Early History

The area now known as Tarzana was originally part of the San Fernando Mission, which was established in 1797 by Spanish settlers and missionaries, who eventually displaced the indigenous population. Later on the area was seized by Mexico and then sometime afterwards, the United States, at which point the area came to be part of a sequential order of large cattle ranches owned by the wealthy and powerful local elites. Beginning in the 1870s, the area was purchased by investors who transformed it into a large-scale wheat farm operation.

In 1909 the surrounding area was purchased by the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company. General Harrison Gray Otis, founder and publisher of the Los Angeles Times, had invested in the company, while also purchasing 550 acres in the center of modern-day Tarzana. Another investor established a small town called Runnymede in the general vicinity and allocated the surrounding land for small poultry ranches and berry farms.

In 1915 Edgar Rice Burroughs, best known as the author of the Tarzan stories, purchased Otis’ land upon which he built a large home, and renamed the property, Tarzana Ranch. Burroughs subdivided and sold the land for residential development, while the neighboring small farms were also converted to residential areas. In 1927, local residents renamed the town Tarzana in honor of Burroughs and his famous literary character.

Trivia

Portola Middle School in Tarzana was used as a location for the movie Thirteen.

In the Paul Thomas Anderson film Magnolia , Tom Cruise's character, Frank T. J. Mackey, was born and raised in Tarzana. The climactic scene from that same movie occurs on the intersection of Reseda Boulevard and Sherman Way, a locus for many P. T. Anderson scenes.

Grab your destiny and your business card wallet

They say leaders are born, not made. In this day and age, however, leaders have to earn the right to be leaders. There’s much to be proven, much skill to be shown in order to get to the top. Still, not all who do make it to the top make effective leaders. In a dog eat dog world, most of the grunts somehow make it to the top, while the true leaders, the ones who truly deserve leadership, are left behind.

Why kiss it when it stinks?

By principle, it’s supposed to be easy enough to make it to the top in the corporate world. You start at the bottom, consistently show an exemplary performance, maybe do something spectacular or two, and eventually, you’ll find yourself behind a massive oak desk in a gargantuan office with people drooling over the contents of your business card wallet. Indeed, if you are dedicated and if you work hard, there’s no doubt that you’ll make it.

However, it hardly ever happens that way. Office politics make it almost impossible. You’ll find that the people getting promoted and are rewarded with the fancy business card wallets are the ones who brown nose and basically, pardon the expression, kiss ass. You’ll also find that corporations often bring in people from the outside for higher management positions, people who are often well connected to the company’s higher ups.

It is unfair, indeed, but corporations get away with it anyway. And because of that, you, the workaholic who knows how the company is run like the back of your own hand, are stuck for years with mundane job descriptions. In fact, the best you can probably hope for is a lower management position and a business card wallet.

Is there hope for the little people?

As bleak and hopeless as the office political climate may seem, there’s always hope for you to get that leadership job that you deserve. You can’t, however, achieve anything by keeping your head down and staying mum about it. For you to earn the right to sit at that board room and carry around a fancy business card wallet filled with elaborate business cards, you have to stand up and get noticed.

You know your job and the processes best, but you also know that trends are always changing. Take the initiative. Point out the flaws of the processes that are already in place and seek to improvise these processes. When production time and costs and other statistics are greatly improved, you are bound to get noticed. Step up and take control of your team. Take the extra step and help out weaker members of your team. By doing so, you are proving your worth as a leader. That’s something that the powers that be can’t ignore in a hurry.

Indeed, by showing initiative and promise, you are proving that you are worthy of becoming a big boss with a fancy business card wallet. Your dedication will be rewarded, and you will become the leader that you were always destined to be.

Step by step to starting a successful website

:
So you have an idea and you want to create a website, but you just dont know where to start. Follow this guide to help you on your patch to running a successful website.

Brainstorm: Think of the type of site you want to create and the site name. Your site name should be catchy, easy to remember and relevant to the content of the site.

Buy the domain name and hosting. You need to buy a domain name that matches your site name (makes sense right?). this part can be frustrating as your idea for a name may already be taken. Search for alternatives or hyphenate it or go with an alternate suffix like “.org,.net, or. us”

Even though it maybe cheaper to go somewhere else for hosting, buy the hosting from the same company you bought the domain from. It’s just easier that way and tech support will be able to help you out more since they can access all aspects of your account (if you need them)

Work on the design and layout of your site. Even though content is the most important factor to the success of your site, you need to be able to lure visitors in. if you have a clean and appealing site, then visitors will stay longer on your site. Another important thing about layout is here you will decide how all your content will be organized for accessibility.

Add content. This is where you wordsmith skills come out. Write, add pictures add whatever content you can think of that is relevant to your site. Organize the information in the view of the visitor

SEO your site. Search Engine Optimization is where you configure your site to be friendly to search engine results. This will make you rank hire on certain search results. The goal should be to listed on the first page on certain searched keywords.

Test your site. Check for bugs and loop holes in your site. Look for spelling mistakes, broken links etc. you don’t want to discredit you site from the start.

Add a Trend Analyzer. By adding this feature you can see where your visitors are coming from, where they are located physically , how long they stay on your site,  and what information do they look for. This can be very useful information when you decide to sell ad space on your site and you can then proove to your advertiziers the traffic you get to your site.

Submit to Search Engines, Advertise, Link exchange, One-way links: Submit your site to be crawled by search engines. Do a search for submit site or suggest a site and submit your site to those results. This part is extremely important as you want people to find you thru the search engine.

Advertise your site to search engine results like Google. This is the quickest way to get traffic to your site. go to google. com/adwords to start a campaign

Link Exchange can be very tedious. Look for sites to swap links with. You can even find sites that act like middleman where you can meet other people who want to swap links. Just do a search for link exchange. Be careful of who you do link exchanges with. Avoid: porn, gambling, and racial/hate sites.

A one-way link program is where you pay a monthly fee and you get a bunch of links pointing to your site. This can be a great way to increase the popularity of your site. However, try to check the quality of the links. Some programs have been listed a “link farms” and their links will not count towards your Page Rank in Google. If you can buy a one-way link from a high PR then do it.

SEO your site. You have to tweak and configure your site so that it is optimized for search results. As you gain more traffic you will understand the type of visitors and what they are looking for. SEO it so you can rank higher on specific keywords. This is where your Trend Analyzer shines.

Continue to: Test you site for broken links, add content on a regular basis, look for methods to increase traffic for your site, get incoming links, etc.

Your site can never be finished. You have to continuously make improvements and make your visitors experience unique. Look for feedback from your visitors and add content relevant to your site.

Survey parents need the facts about injury risks to children

A national survey of 1,000 parents found that many don't know key facts regarding potential safety hazards for children.

Among the survey's findings: One in three parents are unaware that children can drown in as little as 2 inches of water. Less than half of parents know falls are the leading cause of unintentional injuries to toddlers. And more than half underestimate how long children should be in a booster seat.

"Particularly in the area of car safety seat usage, parental knowledge tends to decrease as children age," said Dr. Michael Gittelman, an emergency room pediatrician and medical adviser to "Get on Board with Child Safety," a national child injury prevention initiative. "Parents need targeted information about the different unintentional injury risks to children as they grow, from infant stage to toddlers to kids and all the way through adolescence."

Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for U. S. children ages 14 and under. "Get on Board with Child Safety" was spearheaded by the children's brand "Safety 1st" and the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions. They offer the following tips for parents:

* Use a booster seat for children up to 8 years or 80 pounds. Adult seat belts usually do not fit such children properly unless they are in booster seats. When the belt sits too high in the abdominal and neck areas, it can cause serious injuries in an auto crash. Your child is approximately half as likely to be injured when using a booster seat instead of a seat belt alone.

* Always have your children wear a helmet. Bike injuries send hundreds of thousands of kids ages 5 to 14 to the emergency room each year.

* Supervise the trampoline. Approximately 90,000 kids visit the emergency room each year after a trampoline injury. Trampolines are even more dangerous when multiple kids are jumping at once or when a child does somersaults.

* Never leave children unattended in or near the water. Install gates around pools and use doorknob covers to prevent toddlers from getting out of the house and into water without supervision. Always drain small pools when not in supervised use.

Super cat urine prevention tips

Many times cat owners are at a loss as to why their cat doesn't use their litter box. Here are some great tips that can help you solve the problem.

The litter box is the first thing you should check. It should be in a quiet, private area of the house. Many people put them in their basements and leave the door open a little as this not only creates a private environment but also keeps odors to a minimum in the rest of the house.

Some use a closet but if you do this be sure and keep the box clean to reduce odors in such a confined space and don’t forget to leave the door open!

Another placement possibility is under a table. Many people find a place without carpeting is best from a maintenance point of view as tile or cement is a lot easier to clean.

Ask yourself if you changed the litter box in any way:

* Has the box been moved to a high traffic area recently?

* Does the box need cleaning?

* Is a new litter being used or does it have too heavy a scent (clumping and unscented is best).

* Has the depth of the litter in the box changed? Some cats like their litter deep, others shallow.

* Your cat has outgrown the box and needs a larger one.

* The box is too hard to enter and exit. This can be an issue for older cats.

Do not put food and water near the litter box. Cats like these two areas kept separate (don’t you?).

If your cat has picked out a particular room to soil try closing the door to that room if you can or cover the target area with furniture.

Put a bowl of food over the target area as cats like to keep their eating area away from their “bathroom”.

Take your cat to the Vet on a regular basis.

If you have more than one cat get each one of them their own litter box.

Have you recently moved? A cat might smell an area where the previous owner’s cat urinated.

Let the cat alone while it goes so it can have some privacy.

If it is a new cat in your home it could take from three to eight weeks to get adjusted to the new environment. Be patient!

Was there a recent addition or loss to the family? A new baby, spouse? This is usually temporary until the cat adjusts to the change in their environment.

A change in your schedule can throw off your cat's schedule as well and cause problems. Try and phase in major lifestyle changes gradually.

NEVER EVER punish the cat by kicking, hitting, chasing, screaming or rubbing their nose in their urine (remember the smell doesn’t bother them). Cats cannot make the cause and effect connection like we can so punishment after the fact is useless and will only make matters worse.

Cats are naturally very clean animals and they know where they are going. It is important to remember this and try and help your cat overcome any stress or anxiety they might be having in a caring and loving manner.

How to start with scuba diving

:
SCUBA stands for Self-Contained-Underwater-Breathing-Apparatus and has become populair the last few years because it's exciting, a sport for everyone and because the technology has made it easier and easier.

You probably remember Jacques Cousteau who has done very well for the SCUBA industry with his wonderful underwater videos. Since his videos and underwater explorations, SCUBA diving has become more and more popular. At the moment of writing (06/2006), PADI, the world largest diving organisation has more than 130,000 dive professionals and around 5300 PADI Dive Centers and Resorts operating in 180 countries and territories.

Where do I find a dive center?
The best place for you to find a dive center is probably on the website of PADI ( padi. com). You can find a dive center in 180 countries, that means that you will probably locate one close to your home. You can contact the dive center with your requests and they will be more than happy to provide you with any information you need.

On holiday or rather at home?
That totally depends on what you want to do. You can even combine it! It is possible to do the theory and swimming pool lessons at your dive center at home, and to do your open water dives at your holidays. It is called a referral, just ask your dive center to arrange it, most of the time they have special deals for you. Referrals are usually valid for 12 months so you can take your time for it.

Some populair destinations for SCUBA diving are the Red Sea and the Caribbean. Both destinations offer clear and relaxed conditions and have hundreds of dive centers to choose from.

You can find diving courses on Diving Answers, we collect diving courses from all over the world and put them on one page... simple! It is an easy way to find your first diving course and we would be more than happy to give you any advice in our forum or per email. Independant advice, because we do not sell holidays or courses our selves.

What to look for?
Don't only look at the price, look at the contact and response you get from the dive center, talk with your future instructor and staff, and ask many questions. Diving instructors should have more than plenty of patience and most instructors are really friendly people who love to help you out.

Don't be afraid because they train people everyday. Look however for quality and not quantity. It is not important how long an instructor has been training or how many students he or she has trained so far. It is about how much effort, devotion and love he/she puts in their work. Do you rather certify with a diving instructor that makes sure that you know what you are doing or are you just looking for a certification?

I promise you fun and an unforgettable adventure while breathing for the first time underwater. Have fun!

Cheap holidays in nissi bay

When you are planning you cheap holidays to Nissi Bay, you want to allow enough time for all the fun activities and the attractions in the area. The beaches are beautiful, as they seem to go on forever. Beautiful blue clear waters meet the silver colored sands. You can actually walk in the water and see the bottom. The unique thing about these beaches is the visitors, not people, the pelicans. They seem to greet you and welcome you to the beach. The pelicans share the beach with everyone who visits. The kids just fall in love with an experience of this kind.

Nissi Bay and cheap holidays just seem to come together so perfectly. The boat cruises are the perfect way to spend a day. The inexpensive cruises provide music, drinks and foods. You will travel around Cape Greco, Pernera and Protaras. When you are enjoying the cruise, they will stop and let you enjoy some swimming as well as some snorkeling. This is a great way to spend the day while enjoying the scenery and the warm sun. If you need more excitement, water sports are quite popular in Nissi Bay.

If you enjoy snorkeling, this is very popular as well as jet skiing and windsurfing. Parasailing is also very popular and the water and winds keep you going for hours. It is a great afternoon delight. Outdoor activities on the beaches are one great way to enjoy your vacation. The Mediterranean Sea is the best place to sun and have fun. If you prefer to stay on land, you can watch the water enthusiasts from the warm silvery sands. If you need to get out of the sun for a while, take some scuba diving lessons in Nissi Bay.

Plan your cheap holidays with scuba diving lessons. Yes, Nissi Bay has a center for taking a three-day class to learn the basics of scuba diving before entering the deep waters. This is great for someone who really wants to experience the deep waters, but has no experience. They teach you what you need to know and then, you are unleashed to the depths of the Mediterranean Sea. If you have had enough water sports and want to ty something a little dryer, horseback riding is something to experience on the beaches and other areas.

They have about nine stables that offer horseback riding adventures. You can plan a day or even longer with a guide that can help you with the fundamental things you need to learn. The nice thing about horseback riding is that you see things that you cannot see from a car. The horses take you to areas that are far off the beaten track to areas with no hustle and bustle of people or vehicles. Nissi Bay is a true delight for a vacation. You may have noticed that there is nothing about history or culture, which could be because Nissi Bay is all about fun and excitement. You will enjoy the restaurants, hotels and the area for fun not the history of the area.
